Layla Tobin’s photographic work focuses on the themes of transience, novelty-seeking and limerence. Her work explores these ideas through a personal lens, capturing intimate portraits of the people who enter her life. In ‘I can see the end, in the beginning of everything’ Tobin presents a cohesive series of portraits with an anonymous city acting as another subject throughout the work. The work portrays the idea of ephemerality and what it means to constantly be searching for a new beginning. Within the work, Tobin examines her need for fluidity and impermanence and creating novelty within her own world. The series is a cohesive collection of photographs which create a connected experience between each individual piece. The images capture the beauty in mundane experiences, focusing more on the relationship between the artist and her subjects. Tobin is deeply interested in the gaze, and how this can alter the viewing experience of each individual image and the body of work as a whole.
